Premier League: Iwobi mercurial in Everton win; Iheanacho’s Leicester City fall short against Chelsea

Some Nigerian players were in action for their clubs, and while some had a good day in the office, it was a bad day for others

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi had a superb performance for Everton in their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Brentford.

Everton were looking to return to winning ways after failing to win their previous three games. Toffees boss Sean Dyche handed Nigeria midfielder Iwobi a starting shirt in midfield.

The Toffees started the game well and they scored inside the first minute. They went on a quick attack, that Iwobi was involved in. He received a ball halfway into Brentford’s half and sent a pass to Abdoulaye Doucoure, who then spread it to Dwight McNeil on the left side of Brentford’s box. The Englishman then sent a wicked shot past a helpless Raya in Brentford’s goal to make it 1-0.

After conceding, Everton held on tightly to their goal. Iwobi was superb in midfield. Brentford dominated the game, but Iwobi was massive for the Toffees. The former Arsenal man had three key passes, two interceptions, three tackles, and 48 touches.

The win ensures that Everton climb to 15th in the Premier League log, two points above relegation.

Meanwhile, Frank Onyeka got his first minutes for Brentford since November 2022 as he was introduced into the game in the 74th minute. However, his introduction did not help his side.

Iheanacho caged by resurgent Chelsea

Kelechi Iheanacho played just behind Patson Daka for Leicester City when they welcomed Chelsea to the King Power Stadium.

The Blues have been impressive in their last two games, and they were looking to continue their run against the Foxes.

Leicester City started well, but they were pegged back by a goal from their former player Ben Chillwell.

The Foxes found their way back through Daka, but goals from Kai Havertz and Kovacic sealed the 3-1 win for Chelsea.

Iheanacho was ineffective in attack. He had one shot on target, 42 touches, and lost the ball 14 times.

Wilfred Ndidi was an unused substitute.
