Iheaancho has made 19 appearances this season, including 6 starts, and has produced 4 assists along with 3 goals in the domestic league
Nigerian international, Kelechi Iheanacho, has been challenged by former England and Leicester City player Emile Heskey to get beyond his costly errors against Southampton.
As the wasteful Foxes visited the struggling Saints at the St. Mary’s Stadium, they suffered yet another dismal 1-nil loss.
The East Midlands’ efforts to turn things around against the Hampshire-based team were once again foiled as Carlos Alcaraz handed Ruben Selles’s team the lead after 35 minutes by slamming a shot past Leicester goalkeeper, Danny Ward.
Brendan Rodgers’ squad had the most chances to draw the game, with Nigerian international Iheanacho heading three magnificent crosses off target in the first half.
The 25-year-old was handed another opportunity halfway through the second half after intercepting a pass from Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu. The Super Eagles’ forward elevated his shot, but it missed the mark.
During a discussion on the Match Of The Day broadcast, Gary Lineker and Ian Wright, who were astounded by the Nigerian’s misses, ripped him to shreds.
The former Liverpool Hero, who might have joined in the bashing, was quick to highlight the Nigerian attacker’s strong performance in his return to the starting lineup.
“We created a few chances today. With a bit more composure and being a bit more clinical, Kelechi could’ve had a couple of goals today. That gives you a little bit of confidence.” he told Sky Sports, according to the Leicester Mercury.
“He’s got three goals in six (league) games I think, plus three assists as well, so he’s not doing too bad and he’s creating chances. I just think today was just an off day for him, especially the one where he bends it with his left foot, they usually go in the back of the net and today just wasn’t a good day for him,” he added.
The 2022–23 season has not gone well for Rodgers’ men; they have only won seven games and lost fifteen more.
Heskey, who amassed 62 caps and scored 7 goals for the Three Lions, insists the Foxes must keep going and have a positive attitude as a team.
“They’ve got to keep going, they’ve got to have belief, because you can lose that belief very quickly when you’re down there. Winning is a habit, but so is losing.” he added.
Leicester will have another opportunity to establish themselves when Graham Potter’s Chelsea visit King Power Stadium on Saturday.
