Mozambique 0 – 2 Nigeria: Lawal, Muhammed’s wonder strikes propel Flying Eagles to U-20 AFCON QF

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are through to the quarter-finals of the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations after beating Mozambique’s Mambas 2-0 in their last Group A match at the Suez Canal Stadium on Saturday.

First-half thunder strikes from Samson Lawal and Ibrahim Mohammed were all the Flying Eagles needed to shoot down the South African minnows and advance as group runners-up behind Senegal.

The Nigerian boys dominated proceedings in the opening half hour without doing anything in attack and in midfield particularly well, only for two spectacular goals within the next ten minutes to put them in the driving seat.

For the opening goal in the 33rd minute, Samson Lawal dummied past a Mozambique player at the edge of the area before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the bottom left corner.

Eight minutes later, it was two-nil to the seven-time African champions after Ibrahim Mohammed, from 20 yards out sent an audacious strike into the top right corner.

Nigeria created little after the break and settled for the two-goal advantage that sealed the second spot in the group.

In the other group match, Senegal, embarrassed, hosts Egypt to end their group-stage campaign with nine points obtained from three straight victories.
