Iheanacho’s incredible streak continues against Tottenham; Onuachu’s first Southampton start ends in disappointment

The Premier League returned to action on Saturday, and some Nigerian stars were in action for their clubs

Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho was the best performer of all the Nigerian players that featured in the Premier League on Saturday, as he got a goal and an assist for Leicester City in their 4-1 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur.

Iheanacho got a second consecutive Premier League start when Leicester City welcomed Tottenham to the King Power Stadium on Saturday. However, compatriot Wilfred Ndidi, who is yet to return to full fitness had to start from the bench.

Leicester City did not have a dream start, as Rodrigo Bentancur scored after just 14 minutes to put Spurs ahead.

However, Leicester City went storming back, and they pulled one back through Nampalys Mendy just nine minutes later.

From then, it was a Leicester City show, and Iheanacho was there to coordinate the assault.

He supplied the assist for James Maddison’s goal that put Leicester City ahead in the 25th minute.

Iheanacho then went ahead to get his own goal before halftime, and it was a peach of a goal. The Super Eagles star was at the end of a clearance from Harry Souttar, and he showed great skill dancing past Dier and placing a perfect and precise curler past Lloris in the Tottenham goal.

Asides from his goal, Iheanacho registered 35 touches, two tackles, and won five of his ground duels before he was taken off for Jamie Vardy in the 77th minute.

Harvey Barnes then completed the scoring for Leicester City in the 81st minute to complete the 4-1 win for the foxes.

Iheanacho now has five goal involvements for Leicester City in his last three games.

Meanwhile, at the St. Mary’s, it was a debut to forget for Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu, as his Southampton side fell to a 2-1 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Onuachu started his first home game for Southampton when they welcomed Wolves.

It looked like it was going to be a good outing for Onuachu and his fellow saints after Alcaraz gave Southampton the lead in the 24th minute.

Their job was made further easier when Mario Lemina got sent off after committing a second bookable offense.

However, Southampton showed why they sit at the bottom of the Premier League. Saints’ defender Jan Bednarek scored an own goal in the 73rd minute to give Wolves a lifeline.

Then Joao Gomes scored in the 87th minute to seal the win for Wolves.

Onuachu had a poor game. He had no shots on target, a 55 percent pass accuracy, and he lost the ball 15 times.
