Several English Premier League clubs, including the Hammers, are in pursuit of the Nigeria international after his splendid spell in France
Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has been left baffled by West Ham’s bid to sign FC Lorient forward Terem Moffi.
West Ham are one of the numerous English clubs, among which are Southampton, Brighton, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace, interested in bringing Moffi to the Premier League this summer.
But the Hammers are believed to be ahead of the chasing pack after reportedly submitting a bid of £20 million with another £5 million in add-ons for the serial goal poacher.
The deal, though, remains far from being concluded as Lorient are believed to be holding out for a fee of £30 million for the in-form Super Eagles striker.
However, it is a deal that Paul Robinson finds hard to reconcile with West Ham’s playing style.
The former goalkeeper argues that the Hammers have enough striking options in Michail Antonio and Gianluca Scamacca who arrived from Italy in the summer.
Robinson believes West Ham need not panic-buy Moffi as the quality in the team will eventually shine through and power them out of relegation trouble.
“I cannot understand the talk of (Terem) Moffi,” the former Blackburn Rovers goalie told Football Insider.
“They do not need another striker. Moyes only plays with one up front. They have already got Antonio and Scamacca. There is no need to bring a third option in the equation.
“I do not think there is many positions that they can strengthen in.
“The priority for Moyes will be to get all of his players fit. The performance that they gave at Leeds United was promising. It was not the performance of a team that was struggling at the wrong end of the table.
“When you look at their starting XI it is strong enough to compete in the top half of the table. They should not be in a relegation fight.
“I wonder whether European football has taken its toll over the past two seasons.”
Fast, strong, and with a dangerous left foot, Terem Moffi has often been likened to Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku.
The Nigeria international has built a solid reputation in front of goal in France after scoring 34 goals in 87 Ligue 1 games since arriving from Belgium two and a half years ago.
This season, the 23-year-old striker has already registered 12 goals in 18 appearances for Lorient.
