Dessers was struggling to get games when he was at Genk, but his story changed after his loan spell at Feyenoord
Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has revealed that he could have joined Belgian Jupiler League club Antwerp instead of Feyenoord.
Dessers arrived in Genk 2020, but he had to play second-fiddle to compatriot Paul Onuachu. He eventually decided to leave the club on a season-long loan transfer to Feyenoord.
His transfer to Feyenoord yielded fruits, as he shone like a million stars. Dessers scored 20 goals in 41 games. He marked his name on the continent, scoring ten goals in 13 Europa Conference League games.
However, Feyenoord refused to make the transfer permanent. Dessers then returned to Genk in the summer, after which he moved to Cremonese in a deal worth €6.5million.
Reflecting on his move, Dessers revealed that he was supposed to move to Antwerp, but the deal fell through and he had to sign for Feyenoord at the last minute.
“If Antwerp had continued the transfer then, I would never have ended up in Rotterdam, Dessers told Nu.nl as per Feyenoordoings.
“Maybe if I did not move to Feyenoord, I would not have had the opportunity to be in Italy now either. It’s all in such small things.”
Dessers’ switch to Cremonese is one of the biggest in his career. Unfortunately, he has struggled to score goals. Dessers has just two goals after 13 Serie A games.
He would look to get back into form and start banging in the goals for Cremonese.
