Onuachu tips former Liverpool star to win Belgian Golden shoe

Onuachu won the award in January this year, and he believes that the former Liverpool star will be his successor

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has tipped former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to win the Belgian Golden Shoe in January.

Two seasons ago, Onuachu scored 33 goals in the run-up to Genk’s second-place finish in the Jupiler League. He got the reward for his efforts, as he became the first African player to claim the prestigious Belgian Golden Shoe in January this year.

Ahead of the next award ceremony in January, Onuachu is not the favourite to win the prize, but he feels Club Brugge goalkeeper Mignolet has done enough to win the award.

“I think Simon Mignolet has to win it. He has had a very good year and is an excellent goalkeeper. There is no doubt about that, he would be the deserved winner,” Onuachu said as per Voetbal 24.

“He saved a lot of points for Club Brugge. There is also Tarik Tissoudali from AA Gent who has a chance, I think. Although I fear for him that his knee injury will affect his final result too much.”

Meanwhile, Onuachu is not convinced with his chances as he feels he has not done enough to win the prize for the second time.

“I don’t think I will make it myself. If I get on the podium, I think it will be second or third.”

This edition could be the last that Onuachu will experience af Cegeka Arena. His contract expires at the end of the season, and a move abroad could suffice in January as he is one of the hottest strikers in Europe at the moment.
