Meet Spanish youngster of Nigerian origin who was the best player at the World Cup

Spanish footballer Vicky Lopez won the Golden ball award after guiding Spain to the title at the just concluded FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

Spain were the champions last time out in 2018, and they were still unstoppable in India, weaving past opponents with ease.

A key component in their performance was Lopez. The Barcelona midfielder scored two goals in the tournament, but asides from her goals, she was spectacular.

Lopez was the go-to player whenever Spain were in trouble. The 16-year-old midfielder controlled things in the middle of the park with her deft and smart touches. And most of the plays that Spain made were through her.

A dive into Vicky Lopez’s Nigerian descent.

Nigeria finished third at the World Cup for the first time, but they would be rueing the fact that they were unable to get a talent like Lopez.

Lopez is of Nigerian descent. She was born in Spain to a Spanish father and a Nigerian mother. In fact, according to reports, her role model is Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala.

According to Ojbsports, he was willing to play for Nigeria, but she never got a call-up until Spain snapped her up.

Lopez’s performance at the World Cup is just one of the numerous feathers on her cap.

The 16-years-old scored 60 goals in 17 appearances during the 2020/21 youth league season for Madrid CFF.

As per FIFA rules, Lopez can still play for Nigeria, but it would be difficult after all that she has achieved with Spain.

Lopez oozes talent, and it would be only a matter of time before she reaches the top of her career.
