The Toffees gave a good account of themselves, but goals from Barnes and Tielemans sealed the deal for Leicester City
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has blamed Everton’s 2-0 loss to Leicester City on his side’s profligacy in front of goal.
Everton welcomed in-form Leicester City to Goodison Park on Saturday. Both teams did not shy away from attacking, as they recorded a joint 34 goal attempts.
However, Leicester City managed to nick the tie courtesy of goals from Youri Tielemans, and Harvey Barnes.
The Toffees did have chances of their own, but they were largely ineffective in the final third. Amadou Onana, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Iwobi and Dwight McNeil were quite wasteful.
Speaking after his club’s defeat, Iwobi blamed his side’s loss on their lack of proficiency in the final third.
“I had a chance in the first half and with their second goal, we were trying to push forward so we are bound to be open at the back. Another counter-attack and they’re able to score. I felt like it was a game that could have gone either way.
“You know Leicester are good on the ball so there were going to be spells where they can dominate, but we also had our own periods of possession.
“We have strong midfielders who are able to create chances as well. It wasn’t the problem. We had a game plan and stuck with it but it wasn’t to be.”
Iwobi has been great for Everton this season, but his efforts were just insufficient against the Foxes. The Toffees take on Bournemouth on Tuesday, and the Super Eagles star would hope that his side get back to winning way and cap 2022 on a high.
