“I was shocked” – Paul Onuachu faults Belgium for snubbing assist-king in World Cup squad

The Nigeria international will not be at the FIFA World Cup following the Super Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for Qatar

KRC Genk forward Paul Onuachu has taken a swipe at the Belgian Football Federation for failing to include club teammates Mike Trésor and Bryan Heynen in the country’s squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Aside from Onuachu, who has scored an astonishing 13 league goals in 14 games, Trésor and Heynen have been the key to Genk’s amazing start to the season.

Trésor has been the best creator in the Jupiler Pro League, with his 13 assists unmatched by no other. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has also chipped in five goals in 17 appearances.

25-year-old midfielder Heynen has also made several crucial contributions, including six goals and two assists.

Still, there was no place for the two Genk stars in Belgium’s 26-man roster for Qatar 2022.

It is a big joke that Onuachu cannot get over.

“I was shocked when I heard that and I wasn’t the only one. You feel that all of Belgium has a hard time with this, don’t you?” Onuachu, who has been a major beneficiary of Trésor’s assists, told the HLN (via VoetbalKrant).

“Look at Mike’s stats. Nobody does better. It is sometimes crazy how things work in football.

“If the sport were fair, Mike and Bryan Heynen would have been there in Qatar. The Belgian football top also knows that those two deserve it.”

Despite missing the World Cup, Onuachu is on course to end the year on a high.

The former Midtjylland ace has been invited for Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal, his first call-up under head coach Jose Peseiro.
