After a spell on the sidelines due to injury, the Nigeria international returned with a bang to lead the Neapolitans to the next phase of the competition
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen came off the bench to find the net as Napoli ran out 4-2 winners over Ajax Amsterdam on Wednesday night.
Osimhen’s strike in the 89th minute of the encounter – Napoli’s fourth of the evening – was his first-ever Champions League goal in the colours of Napoli.
With the win, Napoli are through to the round of 16 with two games to spare, having won all four games played against Liverpool, Rangers, and Ajax (twice).
It is the first time in history that the Neapolitans have made it past the group stage with two matches left to play.
And that on-field success has yielded massive off-field revenue for Napoli.
Il Partenopei’s excellent run in the Champions League has brought more than 20 million euros into the club’s coffers.
Each group stage victory earned Napoli €2.8 million, totalling €11.2 million for the four triumphs. Passage into the knockout phase also fetched Napoli 9.2 million euros taking the Naples-based club’s revenue above the €20 million mark.
Osimhen and Napoli will still face Rangers at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and Liverpool at Anfield before the curtain falls on the group stage.
