Potter’s grand project: Chelsea want Super Eagles forward as focal point of new attack

The Nigerian for a large part of the summer was the name on many fans’ lips but a move was never in the offing, especially due to his heavy valuation

Victor Osimhen is on the lips of European scouts as the ideal man to lead Chelsea’s attack next season.

Recent reports have suggested that Graham Potter and Chelsea are looking to a future project and consider the Nigerian an important part of the project.

Emerick Pierre Aubameyang joined the Blues in a surprising move on deadline day but Chelsea consider his presence largely temporal and are looking at a more permanent solution.

Romelu Lukaku, on loan at Inter Milan is also a consideration but there are suggestions Potter is looking away from the Belgian as the man to lead his attack next season.

Potter has breathed a new lease of life into Chelsea, achieving two straight victories against AC Milan, sandwiched between a Premier League form that is one of the best in the division.

Osimhen has been in scintillating form since returning from injury, scoring two goals in as many games, but there may be a sense of reduced invincibility to his status at Napoli.

Napoli scored 19 goals in his absence with a new set of devastating attacking players emerging from the club’s summer transfer business.

Widely reported to be valued at 100m Euros by Aurelio de Laurentiis, the Serie A leaders may cash out on their most-prized asset if a decent, albeit reduced offer comes in.

Chelsea have a history of Nigerian representation, with Mikel Obi spending 11 years at the club, while Victor Moses, Ola Aina and Celestine Babayaro have represented the club in the past.
