“Nobody wants to be part of failure” – Super Eagles coach on Uzoho’s error vs. Algeria

The Nigerian goalkeeper did not cover himself in glory during Nigeria’s last international match

Super Eagles goalkeeper coach Ike Shorunmu admits that young shot-stopper Francis Uzoho could have done better in stopping Algeria’s winner during the international friendly match with Nigeria last week.

The Super Eagles fell to their third consecutive defeat in all competitions to the Desert Foxes following a 2-1 loss in Oran last Tuesday.

Head coach Jose Peseiro’s men were holding on for a 1-1 draw before a speculative Youcef Atal drive from a distance somehow found its past Uzoho in the Nigerian goal.

Former international Ike Shorunmu believes even Uzoho would not have been pleased with letting in that goal against the Algerians.

And the retired goalie confesses that efforts are in top gear to address the Super Eagles’ weakness in between the goal posts.

“Nobody wants to be part of failure, so, I believe Uzoho was not happy it happened,” Shorunmu told the Guardian.

“On our part as the coaching crew, we are engaged in underground work at the moment. When it manifests, Nigerians will be proud of us. Things will happen gradually.”

The error against Algeria on Tuesday was not Uzoho’s first mistake in the green and white kits.

The Cyprus-based shot-stopper was mostly to blame for conceding a seemingly harmless Thomas Partey shot that handed Ghana a World Cup ticket in March.
