Lookman fires Atalanta closer to Serie A summit after victory over Fiorentina

La Dea were in dire need of a victory against Fiorentina, and the Super Eagles star was on hand to deliver it

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman scored the vital winner for Atalanta in their 1-0 victory over Fiorentina.

After Napoli’s 3-1 win over Torino on Saturday, Atalanta had to produce something special against Fiorentina if they were going to be in touching distance of the Serie A summit.

La Dea boss Gian Pero Gasperini gave Lookman the nod to start against their visitors.

The first half was eventful, with both teams creating chances aplenty, but they lacked the cutting edge in the final third.

However, they returned with more fire in the second half. Fiorentina showed more urgency, but it was Atalanta that altered the status quo in the 59th minute.

Luis Muriel went on a quick attack for Atalanta, and he laid a pass on a platter for Lookman, who struck into an empty net to make it 1-0.

Fiorentina asked questions upon questions after falling behind, but Atalanta held on to their lead with a firm grip to see out the 1-0 victory.

The victory puts Atalanta level on points with Napoli, but they sit second because of their inferior goal difference.

Also, the victory ensures that Atalanta preserve their unbeaten run. They are the only teams that are yet to lose, alongside Napoli after eight games.
