Former Ajax star believes Bassey needs to improve

The Godenzonen started the season in blistering form, but they have lost their mojo in recent weeks

Former Ajax midfielder Marciano Vink believes Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey needs to improve so that he can fit into Ajax’s playing pattern.

Ajax sold their star defender Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United in the last transfer window. But they secured Bassey’s services from Rangers in a deal worth €23million.

Since he arrived in Amsterdam, Bassey has been decent, helping Ajax keep clean sheets in their opening five games of the season.

However, the Dutch champions have been poor in recent weeks. Ajax have lost three of their last four games, and the 6-1 demolition at home to Napoli summed up their despicable form in the last few weeks.

The center-back pair of Bassey and Jurrien Timber has been unable to stamp their authority in games, as they have conceded eleven in their last four.

Vink believes that Ajax clearly miss Martinez. But he thinks that if Bassey could improve, he would be a great fit for the Dutch kings.

“I believe that Bassey is very strong and that he is powerful in the duels. But at Ajax, something more is demanded, especially if you want to play a constructive game,” Vink said as per Ajax Showtime.

Despite the setbacks, Bassey would hope that his side gets back into their groove and start picking up wins quickly.

Ajax travel to Volendam this weekend before they fly to Italy to take on Napoli in the second leg of their Champions League clash.
