Nigeria’s Super Eagles will not be at the Mundial in November, but one of the team’s greatest ever midfielders is guaranteed a place in the technical room
Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has appointed former Super Eagles captain and coach Sunday Oliseh as a Technical Expert for the FIFA World Cup slated for Qatar later this year.
Oliseh will work together with former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and German great Jurgen Klinsmann in a six-man team that also has three others.
The former Ajax and Juventus midfielder took to his Twitter account to express his delight at landing the role with the world football governing body.
Oliseh also confirmed that he has started working with other team members.
“Extremely honoured to have been appointed by FIFA as a Technical Expert for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar,” the former Borussia Dortmund star wrote.
“In the privileged company of “Sir” Arsene Wenger, Jurgen Klinsmann, and three others. Work started last night. Qatar 2022 is looking great and ready.”
A defensive midfielder in his playing days, Oliseh won honours in the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany before retiring in 2006.
Oliseh made 54 appearances for the Super Eagles, scoring twice, the most memorable being the winner in the 3-2 humbling of Spain at the France ’98 World Cup.
The former Genk ace lifted the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations trophy for Nigeria.
He was also a key member of the Nigerian U23 squad that won Africa’s first-ever football gold at the Olympic Games in Atlanta ’96.
Oliseh coached the Super Eagles briefly in 2015/2016 and was also for a year the manager of Dutch club Fortuna Sittard.
Until a few weeks ago, the 48-year-old was the manager of German lower league side SV 19 Straelen.
