Euro Round-up: Aribo impresses in Southampton win; Onyeka stars against Chelsea; Iwobi’s Everton lose again

The English Premier League returned to the screens on Wednesday with several Super Eagles stars involved for their clubs.

Nigerian midfielder Joe Aribo had something to cheer about after helping Southampton to a 1-0 win at Bournemouth.

Southampton had not tasted victory in any of their previous five league matches before the trip to Bournemouth.

But Che Adams’ ninth-minute strike was enough to power the Saints to a much-needed first win since August.
At the Gtech Community Stadium, a solid midfield showing from Frank Onyeka inspired Brentford to a closely-contested 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

The former FC Midtjylland ace made his second start of the campaign after impressing in the Bees’ decent 2-0 triumph against Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend. Onyeka supplied the assist to Brentford’s first goal in that encounter.

Alex Iwobi and Everton fell to a third consecutive defeat as the Toffees succumbed to a 1-0 loss at Newcastle. The Nigerian midfielder featured for 73 minutes.

Championship

In the English second tier, Leon Balogun was one of the best defensive players on the park as Queens Park Rangers ran out 3-0 winners over Cardiff City.

QPR sit atop the Championship table with 27 points, having played one fewer game than second-placed Blackburn, who boast the same number of points.

Over at The Den, Millwall outclassed Watford 3-0 courtesy of a Tom Bradshaw hat-trick.

William Troost-Ekong was on for the entire duration, Samuel Kalu was introduced at the start of the second half, while Maduka Okoye was benched throughout.

Other competitions

In the Coppa Italia, Monza dumped Udinese out of the competition following a thrilling 3-2 triumph.

Destiny Udogie and Isaac Success were second-half substitutes, but their introduction failed to spur the Zebras to the next round of the Cup.

In the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Barcelona handed a 9-0 thrashing to Portuguese champions SL Benfica.

Oshoala was the outstanding star for the Spanish giants. The Super Falcons star assisted Barcelona’s first and second goals and scored her side’s third and eighth goals of the match.

In Belgium, Victor Boniface was involved as Union Saint-Gilloise defeated Gent 2-0 at their traditional home, the Stade Joseph Mariën in Brussels.

Frank Onyedika also impressed as Club Brugge claimed a convincing 3-0 win over Sint-Truiden.
