Dock broken! Bassey helps Ajax return to winning ways after Napoli humiliation

Bassey sbbDe Godenzonen suffered a heavy defeat against Napoli during the week, but Bassey helped them redeem themselves

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey scored his first Eredivisie goal for Ajax in their 4-2 victory at Volenda

Ajax were humiliated in their own backyard by Napoli when both clubs met in the Champions League earlier in the week. Even without their prolific hitman Victor Osimhen, the Partenopeans claimed a 6-1 victory against the Dutch champions

However, Alfred Schreuder and his Ajax lads looked to get back to winning ways when they traveled to Volendam in their Eredivisie game.

De Godenzonen stamped their authority in from the blast of the whistle, and it took them just 17 minutes to open the scoring.

Derry Murkin conceded a penalty for Volendam after he handled the ball in the box. Ajax captain Dusan Tadic made no mistake from the spot, burying the ball in the net.

Ajax kept up the pressure, and in the 39th minute, they doubled their lead. Nigerian defender Bassey connected to a cross from Steven Berghuis and sent a powerful header past a helpless Filip Stankovic in Volendam’s goal.

Brian Brobbey made it three for Ajax in the 64th minute, but goals from Zeefuik and Eiting made it 3-2 for Volendam to ensure a frenetic end to the game.

Nonetheless, Davy Klaassen was on hand to douse the tension with a strike in stoppage time and seal a 4-2 win for Ajax.
