Super Eagles striker rejects move to Birmingham City

A return to England was on the cards for the Nigeria international after the Blues submitted a late offer to his French employers

Girondins de Bordeaux striker Josh Maja has rejected a move back to England to join Birmingham City, says transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano.

Romano had earlier revealed Birmingham City’s interest in Josh Maja, with the Blues believed to have submitted an offer for the 23-year-old.

While a return to England, where he was born and raised, is definitely in the plans for Maja, the one-cap Super Eagles striker does not believe the time or destination is right for a move.

Maja is not sold on the idea of quitting a high-flying Bordeaux in the French second division for a Birmingham City struggling in the English second tier.

Bordeaux have suffered one loss in six Ligue 1 games and are seated in second place behind leaders Caen. Maja has contributed a goal and three assists to Les Girondins’ decent start to the season.

Birmingham City, on the other hand, have managed just one win in seven matches and are down in the Championship relegation zone.

Rather than join the Blues, Maja has decided to stay in Bordeaux for at least one more season and is set to ink a new two-year deal with the club.

The former Sunderland star would, however, be allowed to leave for free if Bordeaux do not secure promotion to Ligue 1 at the end of the season.
