2019 AFCON bronze-medallist closing in on move to South African club

The Super Eagles shotstopper has been without a club since July, but that could change soon

Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is currently training with South African Premier League club Swallows FC and could join the club permanently if he impresses.

Akpeyi was released by PSL side Kaizer Chiefs at the expiration of his contract in June. And since then, the 36-year-old shotstopper has been without a club.

However, Akpeyi has not rested on his oars, with his regular training posts depicting a player who is still hungry for action.

The former Chippa United man was linked with a move to South African top-flight side Sekhukhune United, but the club denied all the rumors.

However, Akpeyi’s struggles could soon become a thing of the past, as Goal South Africa reports that the Nigerian shotstopper is currently training Swallows FC.

The Club Chairman David Mogashoa also added that the club would sign Akpeyi if he impresses.

“Yes, Akpeyi is a very good goalkeeper, if he enjoys training with Swallows, then we will make it permanent,” Mogashoa told Goal South Africa.

Nonetheless, Akpeyi would hope that Swallows FC can solve its administrative issues. The club was recently banned from making transfers till June 2024, but according to Mogashoa, they were working on it.

Swallows currently sit 14th on the PSL log. And they have the worst defense in the league, conceding 14 goals in eight games. But they would hope that the addition of Akpeyi would give them some assurance in their goal.

Akpeyi was part of the Gernot Rohr-led team that finished third in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
