It’s the UEFA Champions League draws day and the same day various Nigerian players will know their group opponents in Europe’s elite football club cup competition
At least seven Nigerian players will see their teams know their opponents today at the UEFA Champions League draws.
The draws which will hold on Thursday afternoon will feature some of Europe’s most powerful gladiators and other clubs in the lineup of 32 teams.
The most represented country in this season’s Champions League is Germany with five representatives – Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Frankfurt.
The highest of others is from England, Spain and Italy with four teams each. Portugal has three teams while France has two. Scotland also has two teams in Rangers and Celtic.
Ukraine, Belgium, Israel, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Austria and the Netherlands have one team each in the competition.
Some Nigerian players will play a part in their team’s quest in the Champions League this season.
Napoli’s Victor Osimhen will be playing in the competition for just the second time in his career. He made his Champions League debut as a LOSC Lille player and scored against Chelsea that season.
He will be joined by Calvin Bassey who will be starring for Ajax and Zaidu Sanusi with FC Porto. Samson Tijani may play no part for Red Bull Salzburg in this season’s Champions League as he suffered a tibia and fibular feature during preseason.
Olanrewaju Kayode may get a chance to feature again in the Champions League with Shakhtar Donestk after returning from a loan deal to Sivasspor.
Czech champions, Viktoria Plzen will have Nigeria’s Fortune Bassey feature for it in the competition. Taiwo Akinkunmi will have an opportunity to play at the biggest level of European football with Danish champions, FC Copenhagen.
