Super Falcons alert: CAF retains Morocco as host of WAFCON 2024

The North Africans did a splendid job with the hosting of the 2022 edition and have been re-awarded the hosting rights for the next

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has named Morocco the host of the 15th edition of the Women Africa Cup of Nations.

Rising from its Executive Committee meeting in Arusha on Tuesday, CAF revealed the football body had granted Morocco the right to host the WAFCON for a second consecutive time.

And according to reports, CAF named Morocco the automatic host of the 2024 WAFCON as no other nation showed interest in staging the event.

The North African country successfully staged the latest edition of the competition in July, where South Africa finished as the winner.

En route to picking up their first continental title, the Banyana Banyana defeated host Morocco 2-1 in the final.

It was, however, a bittersweet tournament for Nigeria’s Super Falcons.

The nine-time continental queens made it to the semifinal stage to book a ticket to next year’s FIFA World Cup.

But the Falcons only finished fourth after succumbing to Morocco and Zambia, ending the tourney without a medal for only the second time in WAFCON history.

Nigeria are a three-time host of the championship, staging the maiden edition of the event in 1998 and subsequently in 2002 and 2006. The Super Falcons lifted the trophy on each of those occasions.
