Man City close in on deal for defender of Nigerian descent

Manchester City will in a matter of hours complete the signing of Swiss defender of Nigerian descent

The Citizens have submitted a $17.5m bid for Manuel Akanji, with a deal expected to be completed in the coming hours.

According to TheAthletic, Akanji is expected to join Manchester City soon as he is unsettled in Borussia Dortmund where he’s yet to feature this season.

Man City currently have Aymeric Laporte, Nathan Ake, John Stones and Ruben Dias this season but Laporte and Ake have been out injured while Dias and Stones have also struggled for form.

Akanji joined Dortmund from Basel in 2018 and has been a regular at the club until this season. He has been pushed down the pecking order by Nicklas Sule and Nico Schlotterbeck.

The 27-year-old 41-cap Swiss defender was born in Switzerland to a Nigerian father and a Swiss mother.

Akanji is expected to bolster Man City’s ranks this season and will come in important as there are varying tournaments to play including the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, the Champions League and the Premier League.

Man City have shipped in five goals in four games this season and have struggled in the defensive area of their game.
