The Swallows need a victory against the Super Falcons to keep their hopes of remaining in the WAFCON alive
Burundi star Falonne Nahimana has affirmed that the Super Falcons are tough opposition, but they would fight as a team to seal a spot in the next round of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Falcons play their final group game against Burundi on Sunday. It has been mixed fortunes for both teams at the WAFCON. While Nigeria have garnered three points from their two games, Burundi are yet to get a point.
A victory for the Swallows looks extremely unlikely considering the disparity between both sides. The Super Falcons are gunning for a tenth title while Burundi are just making their first appearance on the continent.
Also, Burundi rank 130 places below the Super Falcons. And the gulf in quality would surely play a role.
Nonetheless, Burundi star Nahimana believes they could still cause an upset when both teams square off.
“We are going to play against a very experienced team at the WAFCON,” Nahimana told Cafonline.
“We want to go into this game(vs Nigeria) to correct our past mistakes in the two games that we have played so far and we hope to do well,”
“Tomorrow’s match is the match of my dreams to play against a great team like Nigeria is a great opportunity. For us as players, we need to go and fight as a team and do it with respect for our country.”
The Swallows sit bottom of Group C. But they could still qualify for the next round if they get an unprecedented victory against Nigeria and South Africa beat Botswana. However, Burundi would need to win by a three-goal margin and hope that Botswana get thrashed.
