“I believe the right team will come”- clubless Super Eagles star maintains strong mentality

The Super Eagles shotstopper has been out of a job since July, but he maintains that it would soon be a thing of the past

Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has expressed his belief that he would soon get past his challenges and sign for a new club soon.

The last eight months have been difficult for Akpeyi. The Nigeria international joined Kaizer Chiefs in 2019, but since last December, he did not make any official appearance for the club.

Akpeyi’s time with the 13-time South African champions finally screeched to an end at the end of June, and the club refused to give him an extension.

Since then, the 35-year-old has been without a club. Akpeyi has been linked with Sekhukhune United, AmaZulu, and Orlando Pirates but nothing concrete has materialized.

The former Chippa United man maintains a strong front despite the peculiarity of his situation. And he insists that he is just passing through a phase.

“Being without a club is new for me since 2005 so must just be mentally strong,” Akpeyi told KickOff.

“I give glory to God that he has been granting me strength to be able to go through this period.

“In the past, I wouldn’t be in all of the pre-season training because of national team commitments but the situation is different now since I’m not with a club.

“I just have to be mentally strong through this phase and understand that it is all part of the game.

“I believe that the right team will come,” Akpeyi added.

The 2019 Nations Cup Bronze medallist also confirmed that he already has some offers on the table, but he is taking his time so he can choose the right one.

“For now, I’m just preparing myself by going through my own pre-season while waiting for the right time to sign.

“In preparing myself I’m keeping fit by training with one of the top goalkeeper trainers.

“It is a matter of accepting the right offer from what I have available from both South Africa and outside,” Akpeyi affirmed.
