“Give us this day, oh Lord” – Atletico Madrid star prays for Super Falcons’ success against Burundi

The reigning African champions take on the WAFCON greenhorns later this evening in a winner-take-all encounter

Atlético de Madrid forward Rasheedat Busayo Ajibade has prayed for a Super Falcons victory tonight (Sunday) when the team takes on their Burundian counterparts at the ongoing 2022 Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Nigeria’s Falcons will trade tackles with the Swallows in the final group match of the tournament, with both teams still with the chance of making it to the next round of the competition.

A David-Goliath faceoff

A debutant at the WAFCON, Burundi sit bottom of Group C, having lost their two games against Botswana (4-2) and South Africa(3-1).

However, a big win for Burundi over Nigeria and a South Africa victory over Botswana in the other group game could hand the Swallows a qualification ticket.

Burundi and Huddersfield TAFC star Falonne Nahimana has already stated the team’s resolve to fight with everything they have to beat the Falcons.

The encounter remains a classic David and Goliath matchup, though, with Burundi facing Africa’s most successful national female team.

The Super Falcons have won the AFCON a record nine times and need only to avoid an embarrassing defeat to book their place in the quarterfinals.

What Ajibade said

Still, star forward Rasheedat Ajibade has called on her Creator to help power the Falcons past their opponents.

The former Avaldnes striker wrote on Twitter: “Final match of the #WAFCON2022 group phase. All to play for tonight against Burundi. Give us this day, O Lord. Come on, Naija.”

The Falcons lost their first match of WAFCON 2022 to South Africa (2-1), a match where the team also lost star forward Asisat Oshoala to injury.

The Nigerians recovered on matchday two to force a 2-0 defeat down the throat of Botswana.

Super Falcons are the reigning champions at the WAFCON, having won the tournament’s last edition in 2018, beating South Africa in the final.
