England defeat Germany to win first ever women’s Euro championships

England fought relentlessly against Germany as they made history in front of a massive Wembley crowd on Sunday evening

The Lionesses understood their assignment as they played to make history and win for the first time in the women’s Euro Championships.

Against 8-time winners Germany, that task was always going to be difficult but the Lionesses dug deep to bring it home in front of a massive army of fans.

The trophy is England’s first on home soil in 56 years as they’ve not won any national tournament since the 1966 men’s World Cup.

Still remotely nursing the aches of the Euros final loss to Italy, English fans came out in their numbers to cheer the team on.

A delicious chip by Ella Toone in the 62nd minute sent fans of into raptures as they celebrated what looked to be a perfect course to history.

They were however silenced in the 79th minute when Lina Magull drew the Germans level.

England looked jaded and worn out for much of the rest of the game but worked hard to stay on course before ending the regulation time at par.

The first half of the extra time also ended 1-1 but the heroine of the night and Man City forward, Chloe Kelly made the difference for England as she scored probably the most important English goal in more than half a century.

How many people watched England vs Germany Euro Women’s final?

A record attendance of 87,192 fans were at Wembley to watch England take on their agelong rivals Germany.

It is the highest attendance ever seen in the history of the Euros in the men’s and women’s game.

It also serves as testament to the massive growth of English football in the last five years with various records broken across board both at the club and national team levels.
