The Limburgers didn’t have the services of their big goal poacher Paul Onuachu, but his compatriot deputized brilliantly
Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers scored Genk’s first goal of the new Jupiler League season, but his efforts were not enough, as the Limburgers suffered a 3-2 defeat at Club Brugge.
Dessers played his first competitive game since his return for Feyenoord. In the absence of Onuachu who is injured, coach Vrancken handed Dessers a starting shirt.
However, the game did not start on a good note for the Limburgers, as they conceded in the 22nd minute, courtesy of a strike from Andreas Skov Olsen.
Genk came storming back, and within eight minutes after they went behind, they struck.
Dessers did well to get on the end of a low cross from Daniel Munoz, and he promptly tapped the ball in from close range.
Genk went close to winning the game after Tresor Ndayishimiye scored in the 47th minute, but Club Brugge responded with a goal from Hans Vanaken on the hour mark.
It looked like the game was going to end in a stalemate until the home side were awarded a penalty. Cyle Larin missed the spot kick, but Skov Olsen was on hand to score the rebound and ensure a 3-2 winning start to the new Jupiler League season for Club Brugge.
Dessers saw 78th minutes of action and was decent with two dribbles, 29 touches, and a 74 percent pass accuracy.
