Rated in the league of the club’s best attackers, one-cap Super Eagles forward needs to sort out his future as quickly as possible
Cyriel Dessers is being tipped to become a club hero at De Kuip, as his goals have helped Feyenoord greatly this season, especially in Europe.
The on-loan forward from Genk has scored 10 goals in the Europa Conference League, the highest this season and already has a song to his name by fans of the club.
He’s currently rated in the league of former Feyenoord forwards Pelle and Pierre Van Hooijdonk who scored many goals for the Rotterdamers and the Oranje.
Sjoerd Mossou, Dutch columnist wrote on Dessers; “A player who can effortlessly be added to the Kindvall-Van Hooijdonk-Pellè list. It now seems inconceivable that Dessers will walk out after this season, especially because his transfer fee of 4 million euros is relatively low for a striker. The return of the last few months gives the appearance of an outright bargain: his goals probably already brought in significantly more than his asking price.”
With Feyenoord struggling to cough out Genk’s modest €4m asking price, fans have started a crowdfunding but FIFA statutes are against it.
The club has however reached out to the business community to help fund the move and some businessmen have signified interest in sponsoring the move.
Dessers is growing into a fans favourite at the club and despite his initial struggles, he has turned the corner and impressed at De Kuip.
He has scored 16 goals in 36 appearances this season, with 6 of them coming in the league.
Feyenoord coach, Arne Slot said the attacker has stepped up and is now considered as important as the team’s first forward Bryan Linsen.
“Cyriel has simply developed very well. Especially in terms of fitness, I think. The work that is required of a striker, including in pressure, was Bryan preferred for a long time. But Cyriel is now also part of that. has grown enormously. Everyone has now been able to see with their own eyes that he can also be very decisive for us,” Slot said.
