“It has been carnage” – Super Eagles star discusses preparation for Rangers vs Frankfurt Europa League final

The Gers go up against the German side in what promises to be an action-packed evening in Seville on Wednesday

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey says that getting Rangers fans to Seville, Spain, ahead of the Gers’ Europa League final clash against Eintracht Frankfurt on May 18 has been the definition of chaos.

Rangers will, on Wednesday, look to lift their first European title in 50 years when they trade tackles with Frankfurt at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, the traditional home of La Liga side Sevilla.

Tens of thousands of Rangers fans are looking to find their way to Spain to witness the event unfold in real-time, but only 9,500 will be allowed into the stadium.

The movement of so many people in one particular direction has been chaotic, so much that Bassey confesses that even his family members are struggling to get their travelling arrangements settled before D-Day.

Still, the Nigeria international expects the Rangers fans who get into the Sevilla stadium to create enough electric atmosphere to inspire Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men to victory.

“I’ve been hearing some crazy stories,” Bassey said at the pre-match presser, as per Rangers Review.

“I’m still trying to sort out my own family; it has been carnage!

“I know there is going to be amazing support; there always is with us, whether they are in the stadium or not.

“I know however many that get in will be screaming for all the others that can’t be there; it won’t be any different; it’s just about getting the job done.

“We have to do it for them and for Jimmy Bell. I just wanted to honour him with our celebrations against Leipzig; he was a massive part of this club, to all of us individually and for me.”

Frankfurt defeated Barcelona and West Ham to get to the Europa League final and will be a formidable opponent for the dethroned Scottish Premiership champions.

But Rangers did not have it easy getting to the final either, the Light Blues having to overcome two German oppositions in Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, as well as Portuguese side Braga.

And Bassey insists that the Gers are in top shape to out in their best in the biggest game of their careers.

“We’ve not been thinking too far ahead; we’ve just been taking each game as it comes,” the Leicester City academy product continued.

“We’ve had points where it has looked difficult, being a goal behind against Braga and Leipzig. But we kept pushing through, taking it game by game.

“We feel good as a team, the boys work hard every single day and training session, through pre-season and we are seeing the benefits of that even late in the season.”

Rangers won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1972 but have only made the final of a continental championship once since, finishing runners-up in the UEFA Cup in 2008.
