The Castle Lords got to the finals of the Europa Conference League many thanks to the goals of their Nigerian import
Feyenoord are yet to take up the option of signing Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers on a permanent deal a few hours to the expiration of his loan spell.
Dessers joined the Dutch side from Genk on transfer deadline in the summer, with the Eredivisie side retaining the possibility of keeping him in Rotterdam for 4 million euros.
Feyenoord initially had no plans to spend that much on the attacker. Still, Dessers exceeded all expectations, with his proficiency in front of goal the reason the Castle Lords enjoyed a fantastic season.
Dessers scored ten goals as Feyenoord reached the final of the maiden edition of the UEFA Europa Conference League, the club’s first major European final appearance in more than a decade.
The Nigeria international also managed nine goals to help the Arne Slot-led side finish in the Eredivisie top three.
With Dessers’ exploits making him a club hero, Feyenoord were compelled to raise the €4 million transfer fee to complete the deal for the 27-year-old.
While the transfer fee is no longer the problem, the deal is still in the balance as Feyenoord and Dessers have not agreed on personal terms, according to HLN.
Dessers has always expressed his desire to continue at De Kuip, where the Feyenoord faithfuls adore him.
But talks between the former Heracles forward and Feyenoord have been put on hold as the player is currently in the United States with the Super Eagles.
Dessers scored his first international goal for the three-time African champions in their 2-1 loss to Mexico on Sunday. He is expected to lead the attack again for the Jose Peseiro-led side when they trade tackles with Ecuador on Thursday.
If Feyenoord fail to seal the deal by Wednesday evening (1 June), Dessers will return to Genk, an outcome that is increasingly looking more likely.
