The Nigerian senior national team is getting ready to face their Mexican counterpart in the United States later today
Feyenoord forward Cyriel Dessers has joined the Super Eagles camp in Dallas, the United States, ahead of the team’s friendly meeting with North American giants Mexico.
Dessers, who finished as the UEFA Europa Conference League top goalscorer with ten goals, was in action on Wednesday as Feyenoord fell 1-0 to Serie A side AS Roma in the competition’s final.
The Genk-owned striker last played for the Super Eagles in October 2020 in a friendly game against Tunisia in Austria, his first and only international match for the three-time African champions.
And despite his fine club form, the 27-year-old missed out on the party to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon early this year.
But he has expressed his delight at his return to the national fold, revealing he’s looking forward to playing inside the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and meeting Super Eagles’ supporters.
“Happy to be back, really happy to be back,” an elated Dessers said.
“Beautiful stadium, and I’m looking forward to the game.
“For sure (giving a shout out to Nigerian fans), and I hope to see everybody in Abuja.”
Dessers’ arrival to the Super Eagles camp increases the number of players at the disposal of head coach Jose Peseiro to twenty.
After Mexico, Nigeria will face Ecuador in another friendly faceoff before returning to Abuja to host Sierra Leone in the first match of the 2023 Afcon qualifying series.
