AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham shocked to share top-scorer honours with Super Eagles star

No one in Europe’s third-tier club competition has more goals than the former Chelsea striker, an honour he shares with a Nigeria international

England forward Tammy Abraham has expressed shock that he is not the outright top goalscorer in the UEFA Conference League.

AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham, on eight goals, is the competition’s joint-leading goalscorer, alongside Feyenoord’s Cyriel Dessers.

Dessers got six of his goals during the group stages against Union Berlin, Slavia Prague (2 goals), Maccabi Haifa, and Partizan Belgrade (home and away).

The Super Eagles striker later grabbed a brace away to Slavia Prague in the quarterfinals as Feyenoord secured an excellent 6-4 aggregate win over the Czech Republic champions.

Dessers will look to add to his tally when Feyenoord trade tackles with French side Olympique Marseille in a Conference League semifinal showdown on Thursday.

Abraham has followed a similar path, netting six goals during the group stages and adding another two during the knockout phase, including in the 4-0 defeat of Bodo/Glimt in the second leg of the quarterfinals.

But ahead of Roma’s first-leg semifinal faceoff with Leicester City on Thursday, Abraham was stunned to find he occupies the top spot of the competition’s goalscoring chart alongside Dessers.

“How tied? I thought I was alone!” The 24-year-old forward said, as per Tutto Sport.

Abraham, enjoying a stellar debut campaign in the Serie A, admits he has his eyes set on finishing as the top scorer of the maiden edition of the Conference League.

“It is a new and important competition, and many teams will try to play it in the future. For me, scoring and being the top scorer is an honour. I should have scored more, but it was a good adventure.

“There was that slip against Bodø/Glimt, but we didn’t let that distract us. We came back hungrier than before, and we won the most important of the four games.”

Also of Nigerian descent, Abraham will hope to guide AS Roma past the Super Eagles duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Ademola Lookman and their Leicester City side. A long-term injury ruled Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi out of the encounter.
