Okoye fulfils promise, helps Sparta Rotterdam to stainless victory

The Super Eagles star played a role in keeping his side’s hopes up despite their precarious situation

Super Eagles shot-stopper Maduka Okoye made two brilliant saves to help Sparta Rotterdam to a 1-0 victory at home to Go Ahead Eagles.

Sparta Rotterdam kept their hopes of avoiding relegation after a brilliant performance at Vitesse last week albeit marred by unruly fans.

This week, the Red-White Gladiators continued their fight when they welcomed Go Ahead Eagles at the Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel.

Prior to the game, Okoye stated that he was pumped up and ready to help his team avoid the drop, and he kept his promise.

After a drab first half, the game sparked into life in the second, as Sparta Rotterdam opened up in search of goals.

The Red-White Gladiators were given a lifeline in the 68th minute, as Adil Auassar headed in a free kick from Vito Van Crooij to put Sparta Rotterdam ahead.

Okoye showed his brilliance in goal, making two big saves keep his side in the game. He was also firm, marshalling  his backline brilliantly.

Sparta held out for a 1-0 victory. The win takes them to 16th on the log, two points away from safety with a game in hand.
