Ex-Super Eagles star creates history in India

The 37-year-old has been out of the spotlight for years, but yesterday he achieved a feat that would earn him a place in the history books

Retired Super Eagles striker Bartholomew Ogbeche became the highest goalscorer in the Indian Super League after scoring a brace for Hyderabad FC in their 5-0 thrashing of Northeast United. His two strikes took him to 49 goals in the Indian League.

The 37-year-old opened the scoring in the third minute and added his second in the 60th minute. Goals from Akash Mishra, Nikhil Poojary, and Edu Garcia completed the rout.

Ogbeche has spent three seasons in India, playing for Northeast United, Kerala Blasters, and Mumbai City before joining Hyderabad in July last year.

The former Nigeria international has been spectacular for Hyderabad FC since he arrived. Ogbeche has scored 14 goals in 13 appearances, helping his side to the summit of the ISL after 14 games.

Ogbeche has six caps for Nigeria and was part of Nigeria’s squad for the Japan 2002 World Cup.
