The Nigerian international is back in Germany following his exertions at the 33rd edition of the biennial championship
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi will be available for Union Berlin when the Iron Ones return to Bundesliga duties this weekend.
Awoniyi has spent the last few weeks in Cameroon, where the Nigerian national team made their 19th appearance at the continent’s flagship tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations.
The former Liverpool signing was the Super Eagles leading striker at the Afcon, scoring once in the 3-1 defeat of Sudan’s Falcons of Jediane. But despite winning all three group games, Nigeria crashed out of the tournament following a 1-0 loss to Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles in the second round.
In Awoniyi’s absence, Union Berlin kept up their good form in Germany, winning three and drawing one of their four competitive games in 2022.
And the club allowed the 24-year-old to take a week break after the Super Eagles’ premature elimination.
Awoniyi returned to Germany at the weekend and joined the Iron Ones’ team training on Monday ahead of the team’s Bundesliga trip to Augsburg on Saturday.

With nine league goals for the Iron Ones, the Nigerian is Union Berlin’s leading goalscorer, and he is a viable option to make the starting eleven when next Urs Fischer’s men take to the pitch.
