AFCON 2021: Osimhen has a message for Nigeria ahead of their opener against Egypt

The 23-year-old missed the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations due to an injury, but he is set to return to competitive action this weekend

Super Eagles striker is set to return to Napoli’s matchday squad for the first time in two months after he took part in team training on Friday.

Osimhen has missed the last two months of action due to a facial injury he suffered in Napoli’s clash against Inter Milan in November.

The ex-Lille man went through successful surgery on the fractured left cheekbone and orbit and was officially ruled out for three months.

But surprisingly, Osimhen returned to individual training two weeks after his surgery, albeit with the aid of a face mask.

His return to training raised expectations that he could represent Nigeria at the AFCON, but he had to pull out after he failed to recover fully.

However, the Nigerian international is now expected to return for Napoli’s Serie A game at Bologna on Monday after returning to team training.

Napoli confirmed the news on their website, although it remains to be seen if he will start the game or make an appearance from the bench.

Osimhen has nine goals in 14 appearances for the Neapolitans this season.

NFF unnecessarily succumbed to Napoli antics without a good fight, moreover Osimhen stylishly withdrew from SE squad to the detriment of Nigeria ambition in AFCON. How I wish this team succed to make any player realises that nobody is indispensable.

You are right on point. Neither NFF nor Osimen put up a fight against the racist Italians. Their idiotic racist doctor bluntly lied that Osimen would recover within three months thereby making him ineligible to represent Nigeria in Afcon. Italy is among Europe backwater and this was an opportunity for them to show that at least they have the muscles when it comes to Afcon. Awoniyi now has the chance to prove that he can fill the big shoes left behind by Osimen but then again it all depends on how selfish his team mates are especially the Leicester star trying to do the scoring alone.
