Report: Watford to sign another Super Eagles star

The Hornets have six Nigerian players on their books already, but it is set to increase to seven following reports coming out of the UK

Watford are set to add to their strong number of Nigerian contingents after reports claim that the Hornets are close to signing Super Eagles winger Samuel Kalu.

According to The Athletic, Watford have already agreed a deal with Bordeaux, with Kalu set to undergo a medical on Wednesday (today).

The Hornets will pay a fee in the region of £3.5m to Bordeaux for the Nigerian star’s services. Kalu’s current contract at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux expires in 2023, but the Super Eagles winger has been struggling for form in recent years.

He has only played 323 minutes of league football in the French top-flight this season, with just one goal to his name.

Kalu has also lost his place in the national team, and he is not part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, the move to Watford could be the spark he needs to regain his form. He will not feel out of place at the Vicarage Road as three of his international teammates are currently playing for the club, while the likes of Isaac Success and Tom Dele-Bashiru are still registered with the Hornets.

Kalu’s first line of duty will be to help Watford avoid the drop from the Premier League. Claudio Ranieri’s men currently sit 17th in the English top-flight, but are only just one point above the relegation zone.
