AFCON 2021: Eguavoen speaks on Super Eagles performance against Sudan

The Super Eagles exuded dominance in the victory against Sudan, but the interim boss admits it could have been more

Super Eagles boss Augustine Eguavoen has stated his delight with the Super Eagles performance in their 3-1 victory over the Falcons of Sudan.

Nigeria advanced to the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations for the sixteenth time in history after beating 1970 Champions Sudan.

Samuel Chukwueze and Taiwo Awoniyi gave the Super Eagles a 2-0 lead at the break before Moses Simon’s scored the third goal a minute after the break.

However, Nigeria took their foot off the pedal after the third goal, allowing the Sudanese to grow into the game.

Nevertheless, Eguavoen has stated that he is pleased with the outcome of the game, as he decided to switch to a more conservative play after the third goal.

“We are taking it a game at a time,” Eguavoen said after the game

“We tried to be conservative in our play. It could have been 6-0, it could have been 4-0, it could have been 4-1. Be that as it may, we are happy with all three points.”

The Super Eagles face Guinea-Bissau next, and a draw will be enough for Nigeria to top the group.

  • Please get the facts right, Nigeria has already qualified as group winners even if they loose 10 nil to Guinea Bissau. AFCON uses head to head first before goal difference in determining tie breakers. Sudan and Guinea Bissau cannot get up to six points again and Egypt that still has the capacity to get six points have a deficient head to head record against Nigeria.

So this is the best time for the coach to try as many fringe players as possible.
