Osimhen defies Napoli, departs for Afcon – report

The former Lille lad could be on a collision course with his Italian employers after leaving for Nigeria before a decisive medical checkup

A section of the Italian media reports that Victor Osimhen has departed Naples to team up with the Super Eagles ahead of preparations for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon next month.

It is unknown if Napoli gave Osimhen the approval to momentarily halt his rehabilitation process and make the trip back to his country of birth.

On Boxing Day, the Nigerian international shared on Twitter his attendance at an event hosted by the Asisat Oshoala Foundation, an indication that he is already in town.

However, the 22-year-old has a scheduled checkup on Friday with doctors who have been working with him during the healing period that followed the surgery, which fixed the multiple fractures he suffered in late November.

Osimhen started individual training early in December and was once pictured after a session with a teammate. But he had not been given the medical clearance to join team training.

A specially designed face mask was provided for the Super Eagles striker to aid his integration into the group.

Osimhen, it was initially feared, would be out of action for ninety days, but the youngster made himself available for selection to the Super Eagles’ handlers nearly two months before that return date. He was subsequently named in the 28-man shortlist for Afcon 2021.

Nigeria’s leading goalscorer during the qualifiers, Osimhen, is looking to lead the Super Eagles’ Afcon challenge in Cameroon.

  • Though his is the current African most expensive player, he didn't let that get into his head not to honor his father land. That shows he is very patriotic and I wish him all the best of luck to be the highest goalscorer during the AFCON and beyond.

  • If this news is anything to go by, it shows Osimhen decided not to forget his root coupled with how he got the limelight to his football career. Patriotism at its peak here. I wish him successful AFCON outputs and injury free competition

  • You and I, including Osimhen, know very well how they tried to ridicule our championship. They are trying fervently, to prevent our best players from participating for their selfish interests. It's a shame they tried to destroy the boys face by pretending to be fixing it.... Italians are the worst racists in the world...yeye people!!!

  • It good he is showing patriotism, but his health comes first .he should have waited for the all clear from
His doctors as he is an employee of Napoli and if he plays without clearance any potential injury will not be covered - what then will the NFF do for him. I just hope
Napoli send their own medical team to Cameroon to monitor his - we still have the World Cup Qualifiers as well, and the team is blessed with the likes of Dennis who is in excellent form

  • I don't know why people always criticize the Italians unnecessarily. I still remember that Kanu's heart problem was diagnosed by Italian medics at San Siro. Meanwhile, before then he had spent about 3 years at Ajax without it being detected. But the Italians were still being called names and accused wrongly of trying to terminate the football carrier of kanu prematurely. Meanwhile when ssues emanate from England, we swallow it hook, line and sinker.

  • We need to recognise and appreciate patriotism. There are Nigerians who have made sacrifices for Nigeria but were never appreciated in anyway when they where alive, too late or when they where dead.

  • Osimhen is a Patriotic Nigerian. Dear Lord, Pls Don't allow any player to aggravate this Injury that hasn't totally Healed IJN Amen. Wetin full for Africa na 'War' and 'Rough' Football
