The three-time African champions are the favourites to record a win on Saturday, but the country’s number one football administrator has warned against complacency
The Nigeria Football Federation President Amaju Pinnick has charged the Super Eagles to avoid mistakes and get the needed victory when they face Liberia’s Lone Star on Saturday.
The Gernot Rohr-led side will file out this afternoon (November 13) at the Grand Stade de Tangier in Morocco against the Liberians in the matchday five encounter of the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifying series.
The three-time continental kings, who currently sit top of their group with nine points from four matches, are expected to stroll past their less-fancied opponents.
But the Super Eagles have shown some complacency streaks in recent times, with the team famously throwing away a four-goal lead to draw 4-4 against Sierra Leone in an Afcon qualifier precisely on this day last year.
And only last month, Gernot Rohr and his boys were embarrassed in Lagos when the lowly Central African Republic carved out a historic 1-0 win.
But after meeting with the Nigerian players in their camp in Morocco on the eve of their matchday five encounter, Pinnick told them that Nigerians expect nothing but a win against the Lone Star.
“I have seen the training, and I am impressed by the level of seriousness, fitness, and commitment,” the NFF miss told the body’s official website.
“The spirit is great, and I believe you will do the job tomorrow. Let us leave very few room for mistakes; in fact, no room for errors at all.”
“I don’t need to start telling you how much Nigerians from all walks of life are looking forward to you picking up the three points here.”
“The three points are important, and we should put them in our bags as we fly back to Nigeria tomorrow night.”
Only two points separate group leaders Nigeria and challengers Cape Verde in Group C.
The Blue Sharks host the Central African Republic also on Saturday at about the same time as Nigeria play Liberia.
The Super Eagles will then trade tackles with the Cape Verdeans in Lagos on November 16 in a match that could decide who finishes as the group leader.
