Former Celtic player McAvennie has revealed that Rangers’ plan to extend the stay of their three Super Eagles stars may take a minor tweak.
In December, Rangers Nigeria stars Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo, and Calvin Bassey are expected to return to the National team.
According to FIFA rules, all African players should be released by their clubs before the 28th of December.
Soccernet had earlier reported that Rangers were looking to extend the time for their Clash against Celtic. Rangers play Celtic on the 2nd of January and are looking to appeal with the NFF to keep the Nigerian trios.
According to Football Insider, Ex-Celtic player McAvennie thinks Rangers might want to let go of Calvin Bassey.
“I completely understand that. You want your best players available for the biggest games,” McAvennie said. I think they could strike a deal in January; maybe they will send them Bassey if they can keep Aribo and Balogun.
“That’s to take nothing away from Bassey. I just don’t think they will need him in the Old Firm.”
“Aribo is the main man at the moment, so they will be very keen to keep him in. Him going is a big problem. The only thing I would say is Rangers are overflowing with talent in that midfield.”
McAvennie also praised Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side for their quality in midfield and suggested it would be the deciding factor. The NFF and Rangers are still yet to strike an agreement over the players for the game against Celtic.
