Three Liberian stars land in Nigeria for Super Eagles clash; others expected Wednesday night

The two West African nations begin their chase for a Qatar 2022 World Cup ticket with a matchday one clash in Lagos on Friday

Three players of the Liberian national football team reportedly arrived in Lagos, Nigeria, on Tuesday ahead of the Lone Star’s first group match against the Super Eagles on September 3.

According to the Liberian Observer, the trio of Allen Njie, Oscar Dorley, and Peter Wilson are already in Lagos, awaiting the arrival of the Liberian officials and other members of the national team.

23-year-old Dorley is a teammate of Nigeria’s Peter Olayinka and Ubong Ekpai at Czech champions Slavia Prague. The midfielder scored the only goal when Liberia lost 5-1 in a friendly to reigning African champions Algeria in June.

Njie, 22, plays as a midfielder for Swiss club FC Aarau, while 24-year-old Wilson only recently moved to Cypriot side Olympiakos Nicosia.

A few other overseas-based players are expected to head straight to Nigeria to join the squad.

Earlier on Wednesday, a 23-man delegation headed by the Liberian Deputy Minister for Sports Andy Quamie left the country via a Muritala Muhammad International Airport-bound Air Côte d’Ivoire.

The delegation comprises 11 players (four overseas and seven home-based players) and 12 officials. They arrive later on Wednesday night.

Head Coach Peter Butler will on Friday lead his team to face three-time African champions at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

The majority of the invited Super Eagles stars are already in training under the watchful eyes of German coach Gernot Rohr, preparing for the clash against the Lone Star.
