The Nigerian striker rested through the FIFA window as he was not included in Nigeria’s squad that handed straightforward defeats to Liberia and Cape Verde Islands
Taiwo Awoniyi failed to add to his impressive goal tally as Augsburg managed to hold Union Berlin to a 0-0 draw at the Alte Foersterei Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Awoniyi had scored in each of his three German league matches before kick-off and was high on confidence against a side that had not secured a win this term.
The former Liverpool signing had breached the net against Borussia Moenchengladbach, Hoffenheim, and Bayern Leverkusen before the international break, and he was keen on adding his fourth Bundesliga goal of the season.
But the Super Eagles hopeful missed a chance as early as the 7th-minute following a fast break when his right-footed shot from the right side of the box climbed high and wide to the right.
But there was no further goalmouth action for the 24-year-old in a dull first half where both sides focused more on not conceding the first goal.
The Iron Ones created little even after the break, and Awoniyi had to take matters into his own hand in the 80th minute, dribbling past a couple of Augsburg defenders before his effort was blocked.
It would be Awoniyi’s last telling contribution of the afternoon as manager Urs Fischer sent in Sheraldo Becker in his stead with three minutes left of regulation time.
