Huge blow for Arsenal, West Ham in the race to sign Onuachu

The two Premier League clubs were reportedly interested in the Nigerian striker, but they’ve been handed a major blow

Arsenal, West Ham and Ligue 1 club Lyon have been dealt a huge blow in their hopes to sign Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu.

Onuachu was a man in demand this summer after he scored a remarkable 35 goals in 41 appearances for Genk last season.

The 27-year-old was expected to leave the Belgian club with Arsenal, West Ham and Watford reportedly interested in signing him.

However, he ended up staying at Genk, with the club’s sporting director saying The Smurfs did not receive a suitable offer for the Nigerian.

But it was hoped that Arsenal and other Premier League clubs would return for him in January. However, their plans have suffered a major setback after he signed a new one-year contract at Genk.

A statement on Genk’s website read: “Our club has reached an agreement with Paul Onuachu on a contract extension for one season. He is now affiliated with KRC Genk until mid-2024.

“As a club, we are very proud to still have Paul Onuachu in our midst. Together, we will do everything that we can to achieve our ambitions.”

The former Midtjylland striker has already started the new season in brilliant form with six goals in ten games, including the winners in Genk’s last two matches.
