It’s only midway through the summer transfer window, but Union Berlin has completed the signing of several notable stars, the top pick of which is a former Nigerian youth international
Former Union Berlin coach Christian Beeck is impressed with the quality players the German Bundesliga side has brought in this summer ahead of the 2021-22 season.
Beeck, however, believes that Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi is Union’s best buy as his ability makes him a valuable addition in attack.
Awoniyi spent last season on loan at Union Berlin, where he impressed with his goals, dynamism, and work ethic, which helped the club finish seventh in only their second campaign in the Bundesliga.
Therefore, it was no surprise that the Iron Ones pulled all the stops – including paying a club-record transfer fee – to complete his permanent transfer from Liverpool a couple of weeks ago.
Union Berlin will be challenging for honours in the league, cup, and Europe this term and have brought in eleven new players, including former German international Sammy Khedira.
Retired Hansa Rostock defender Beeck has praised Union’s recruitment strategy bringing in quality signings, but he is not in doubt that the best of the bunch is the 23-year-old striker snapped up from Liverpool.
“For me, Awoniyi is the most successful transfer,” the 49-year-old said as quoted by Bz-Berlin.
“With him, Union has a wall in the front. A great player who brings a lot to the table. He just has to stay healthy and train.”
Awoniyi could play his first competitive game of the season on Sunday when Union Berlin make the trip to third division side Türkgücü Munich in a German cup clash.
