Onuachu may be closer to an exit than before following Genk’s latest transfer decision

The Nigerian international is still on the books of the Belgian side, but events of the last 24 hours could see him depart

Paul Onuachu is closer to an exit from Genk after the Smurfs entered negotiations with Chelsea over the potential transfer Ike Ugbo.

Soccernet per VoetbalPrimeur had reported that Genk are interested in signing the Super Eagles hopeful following his exceptional performance last season.

Ugbo spent last season on loan at Cercle Brugge, and he impressed, scoring 16 league goals to help the side avoid relegation.

Transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Genk are currently in talks with the Champions League winners over a transfer.

Ugbo’s potential addition to Genk means Onuachu may be closer to leaving the club. The 27-year-old is expected to leave after an impressive season that saw him finish as the top scorer in the Belgian top-flight with 33 goals.

Although Genk coach revealed Onuachu could still stay this summer as they are yet to receive a suitable offer for his services, Ugbo’s potential arrival suggests the Nigerian is close to an exit.

Should the Smurfs be successful in their pursuit of the youngster, they’ll have five attackers in their rank, potentially six if Stephen Odey stays.

Also, with wingers Junya Ito and Theo Bongonda at the club, they’ll go with seven attackers into the new season, not counting their attacking midfielders.

These many attackers will leave Genk with no option than to sell some of their players. And with Onuachu attracting interests from several clubs, he’s likely to be the one that leaves.

Selling Onuachu will also allow the club to recoup the money they’ll potentially spend to sign Ugbo from Chelsea.

The former Midtjylland striker will command a hefty fee, with Genk expecting between 20-25m euros for his services.

Although it remains to be seen where he ends up, Lyon appears to be the club leading the race. The Ligue 1 side have reportedly had a bid rejected, but they are expected to return with an improved offer.

Premier League clubs Arsenal, West Ham, and Watford have also been credited with an interest.
