The Nigerian international found the back of the net yet again, although it was not enough to give Crotone the win at Spezia
Super Eagles striker Simy Nwankwo was once again on target in the Italian Serie A after scoring his 16th league goal of the season in Crotone’s 3-2 loss to Spezia at the Stadio Alberto Picco on Saturday afternoon.
Simy put Crotone 2-1 up after Daniele Verde had cancelled out Koffi Djidji’s opener. Although late goals from Giulio Maggiore and Martin Erlic turned the tie around for Spezia, the match once again showed Simy’s striking instincts.
The former Gil Vicente striker has now scored nine goals in his last six league games for The Pythagoreans. His latest goal means only Yakubu Aiyegbeni (17) has scored more goals than Simy among Nigerians in a single season in Europe’s top five leagues since the new millennium.
Aiyegbeni scored 17 goals for Blackburn Rovers in the 2011/2012 Premier League season. No Nigerian player has scored more in a single campaign in Europe’s top five leagues this millennium, but Simy has the opportunity to break that record with eight matches left to play in the Italian top-flight this campaign.
