Afcon: Nigeria are one of the favourites but it won’t be easy- Dosu

The three-time African champions have not won the competition since 2013, but the former Dream Team goalkeeper believes that could change next year

Atlanta Olympic gold medalist Dosu Joseph admits that the Super Eagles are one of the favourites for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations but says it won’t be an easy challenge.

The three-time AFCON champions finished top of their qualifying group with four wins and two draws. The Super Eagles have now qualified for their 19th appearance in the continental showpiece that will be hosted in Cameroon.

However, in a chat with Soccernet.ng Dosu stated that the Super Eagles are well-equipped to win the tournament but insists other teams could also win it.

“Being unbeaten in the qualifying campaign doesn’t make you favourite for any giving competition because the least team you expected may just play the spoiler at the main tournament.

“On paper, Nigeria looks like a team capable of winning the tournament, but other teams won’t just come to make the numbers.”

The Super Eagles finished third at the last edition of the continental tournament in Egypt, behind Algeria and Senegal.

Their best performance at the biennial competition was in 1980, 1994 and 2013, where they won the highly coveted trophy.
