The Super Eagles star started the game against West Brom on Thursday night, but a former Red is not convinced of his abilities
Ex-Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp has raised doubts over Alex Iwobi’s ability to step in for James Rodriguez in the Everton team.
Iwobi had been a late substitute in Everton’s last two league games before Thursday night. However, he was handed a start by Carlo Ancelotti after Rodriguez missed the encounter due to an injury.
The Nigerian international joined the Toffees from Arsenal last season, but his performances at the club have been inconsistent.
He has made 23 league appearances this season but has only started 13 of them. And speaking ahead of Everton’s clash against West Brom at the Hawthorns last night, Redknapp revealed Iwobi does not have what it takes to replace Rodriguez in the Toffees squad.
The former Tottenham star said the Nigerian international’s end product is not good enough to make a difference in the Everton team.
“When I watch Alex, I think his end product isn’t enough, Redknapp told Skysports. He flatters to deceive. He looks like he’s going to go past someone, do something special.
He definitely got the ability, there’s no two ways about it, but he doesn’t do enough, Redknapp added.
Iwobi has two goals in 28 games across all competitions for Everton this season.
